High voltage fuse in this article means a fuse rated above 1,000 V ac, which is how the IEEE C37 fuse standards draw the line. In practice that covers medium voltage E-rated, R-rated and PT fuses, utility fuse links and cutouts, power fuses and current-limiting fuses.

To count as in the U.S., a company needed either a U.S. headquarters (for the company or for its fuse division) or U.S. manufacturing stated on its own website. Each entry says which one applies and cites the page. Companies with only a U.S. sales office did not qualify, even if they make excellent fuses.

Fuses are manufactured in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility and tested in-house at DENCO's factory lab, with third-party testing at IPH Berlin (Germany) available on client request.

2. Eaton Bussmann division, Ellisville, Missouri

Best for: Industrial E-rated and R-rated fuses for switchgear, transformers, drives and starters

U.S. status: U.S. headquarters. Eaton says its Bussmann division is headquartered in Ellisville, Missouri, where it also runs the Paul P. Gubany Center high power lab.

The Bussmann series includes ANSI/IEEE E-rated current-limiting fuses for feeder circuit, switchgear and transformer protection, in ferrule, bolt-on and clip lock construction, with data sheets at 2.75, 5.5, 8.3 and 15.5 kV. Its R-rated backup fuses are typically used to protect medium voltage drives and starters. Utility transformer products such as Bay-O-Net assemblies and ELSP backup fuses are sold separately under Eaton's Cooper Power series.

3. S&C Electric Company, Chicago, Illinois

Best for: Utility power fuses for substations and outdoor distribution

U.S. status: U.S. headquarters and U.S. manufacturing. S&C describes its 47-acre site in Rogers Park, Chicago as its headquarters and manufacturing campus, and announced an added U.S. manufacturing facility in Palatine, Illinois in 2023. The company has been 100% employee share-owned since 2012.

S&C's fuse range includes SMD power fuses for outdoor distribution and outdoor transmission, SM and SML power fuses, the Fault Tamer fuse limiter (a fuse cutout combined with a backup current-limiting fuse for 15 kV through 25 kV systems), Positrol fuse links and the Type XS fuse cutout.

Best for: Backup and full-range current-limiting fuses for utility overhead and pad-mounted equipment

U.S. status: U.S. manufacturing. ABB states that its Hi-Tech current-limiting fuses are manufactured in Hickory, North Carolina.

The Hi-Tech line includes OS series backup fuses for overhead distribution, EXT series backup fuses for wet-well holders in oil-filled pad-mounted switchgear and transformers, FX, EX and SX series full-range fuses, and the Valiant full-range fuse designed for fire mitigation. ABB also offers the Hi-Tech FACT online tool for choosing a backup fuse to coordinate with a transformer's expulsion fuse.

5. Hubbell Power Systems: Chance brand

Best for: Overhead distribution cutouts, fuse links and power fuses

U.S. status: U.S. manufacturing. Hubbell says the Chance brand is manufactured in Centralia, Missouri and Leeds, Alabama, as well as Juarez, Mexico. Chance dates to the 1907 founding of A. B. Chance Company and was acquired by Hubbell in 1994.

For fusing, Chance supplies Type C cutouts and fuse links (Type K, Type T, Type MS, Type QH, Slo-Fast and standard speed), plus HMD power fuse mountings paired with HMU power fuse units for applications beyond expulsion-style cutouts.

6. Littelfuse, Rosemont, Illinois

Best for: Industrial E-rated, R-rated and PT fuses with matching clips and mounting hardware

U.S. status: U.S. headquarters. Littelfuse, Inc. lists its address as 6133 North River Road, Rosemont, Illinois.

Littelfuse manufactures general-purpose E-rated fuses, backup R-rated fuses and PT fuses, with a full line of fuse clips. Its medium voltage page lists ratings of 600 to 8,250 V ac, indicator pins on E-rated and R-rated fuses, encapsulated and sealed versions for hazardous areas, and single-, double- and triple-barrel fuses in bolt-down and clip lock styles.

What in the U.S. can mean

Buyers ask for U.S. suppliers for different reasons, and each one points to a different check. Supply chain and lead time depend on where stock is held and how quickly a supplier can ship. Domestic-content requirements depend on where the product is made, which is a question for the specific part number, not the company. Support depends on whether you can reach an engineer in your time zone.

A U.S. headquarters and U.S. manufacturing are not the same thing, and a company may make some fuse lines in the U.S. and others abroad. If a contract has a domestic-content clause, ask the supplier in writing for the country of origin of the exact part.

How to choose between them

Match the supplier to the family and application first.

• Medium voltage motor starters and drives: R-rated backup fuses used with an overload relay.
